The Dunlop Series headed to Perth’s Barbagllo Raceway for Round 3 of the 2014 Championship last weekend with a quality field of 26 cars making the trip. Michael Hector and his Gulf Western Oil team were determined to continue the recent good form and grab more points for his 2014 campaign.

Practice on Friday saw the car needing work particularly on turn-in to a number of the corners on the tricky Perth layout but the Matt Stone crew worked hard to align the setting of the car with team leader Ash Walsh to give Michael a better set up. Qualifying however had the car not quite on the pace and Hector lined up in P24.

Making one of his usual lightning starts in Race 1, the Gulf Western Oil driver was up to 20th by Lap 2 only to fall foul of a tap and subsequent spin at the Turn 6 ‘bowl.’ This put Hector someway behind the field but he set about punching out consistent lap times and recovered to finish in P22.

Sunday’s race would be a far better affair and not long into the race Hector was up to 18th place. He was having a good run battling with Young Gun Jack Le Brocq and Dan Day. He was well clear of many drivers that he had battled with in the rounds to date many of whom had been lapped. Crossing the line in P18, Hector finished in 21st for the round.

Qualifying remains the Achilles Heel for Hector as he is consistently running in the top 18 cars and is carrying good race pace.

“Qualifying was tough and I just did not get the best out of the car. The MSR boys had changed quite a few things but it was still pushing into Turn 1 and again in Turn 4. Race 1 was another one of those ‘getting taken out by someone else’ sort of races which seems to have been a feature this year! I spun at the bowl and that was that.

“However the Sunday race was a really good run. We cleared a lot of cars had some good dices and moved well up the order. The longer races are really suiting me and my times are consistent which is helping. Another Top 20 is good but if we can qualify better we should be able to push further up towards that Top 15 group.”
