Gulf Western Oil V8 Supercar driver Michael Hector has recorded a season best result finishing the Dunlop Series – Wilson MedicOne Enduro at Bathurst in P16. The Newcastle based driver was upbeat about his chances at the famous Mt Panorama track, but was a little disappointed that his Qualifying position was not as strong as he had hoped. None the less, Hector’s race results this year have shown the longer formats were suiting him.
With a 250km race complete with pit stops for fuel and tyres, the Dunlop Series was heading into the unknown. But as so often is the case at Bathurst, the race was littered with Safety Car interventions, crashes and spins. The almost contiguous track action meant the field was doing very few long runs, rather broken into smaller runs after the Safety Car. This hindered Hector’s progress but by Lap 10 he was in the Top 20. As the Pit Stops started to occur, the Gulf Western Oil team stuck to its strategy of running Michael well into the race before bringing him in and this was paying dividends.
Finally pitting on Lap 25, Hector came in from P8, Michael was one of the last cars to make their compulsory stop. As earlier stoppers had remained on the lead lap, Hector dropped one lap down. His race pace however was consistent and he was able to secure 16th place as the flag fell three laps ahead of scheduled 41 laps, 250km journey.

“It was really hard to sting any decent laps together to make up positions as we seemed to be under a Safety Car every few laps. I was feeling that we could have been inside the Top 15 had we had a better run.”
“We hurt ourselves a bit with Qualifying but we were moving up the field well. We went long into the race before the stop but given the number of Safety Cars it did cost us track position and we lost a lap to the lead bunch. The last safety car hurt us the most as on the restart, as I had to let the lead guys through but I also lost a few places because as the lead guys went past and a few of the others around me got by as I was giving plenty of racing room.
“As all the points for the weekend were on the one race, the 15th place has moved us up to 16th in the Dunlop Series point score. We will head to Sydney to try and finish the year in the Top 15.”
